LYLE E. "JUMBO" YOUNG
ARKPORT-Lyle E. "Jumbo" Young, 68, of Arkport, passed away Wednesday morning (March 10, 2010) at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell.
Born in Nunda on Aug. 9, 1941, he was a son of the late James Albert and Doris Atherton Young. On Oct. 6, 1962 he was married in Arkport to the former Karen S. Luce, who survives.
A graduate of Arkport Central School, Lyle attended the Williamsport (Pa.) Trade School. He was employed by John Patton and Fred Johnson Construction and from 1966 to 1971 he owned and operated Arkport Lumber. For 45 years he was self employed as a building contractor and built and remodeled many area homes.
Lyle enjoyed hunting and was an avid card player.
His family includes his wife of 47 years, Karen; his three daughters, Amy Miller of Bolton, Mass., Amber (William) Phelps of Arkport and Andrea (Chris) McClure of Corning; his son, Jay Young of Hornell; his five grandchildren, Meghan Rauber, Thomas Miller II, Rees Miller, Jared Roosa and Aidan McClure; his two sisters, Lois (Jack) Hendee of Hornell and Shirley (Donald) Stewart of Dansville; his two brothers-in-law, Gary (Darlene) Luce of Haines City, Fla. and Gaylord (Jennifer) Luce of Dansville; also his nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Richard Young and his two sisters-in-law, Kathleen Pearce and Kay Ericson.
Calling hours are from 1-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. A private funeral service will be held in his memory at the convenience of his family at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to either the American Liver Foundation, in care of Becky Frank, 75 Maiden Lane, Suite 603, New York, NY 10038 or to the Mercy Suite at St. James Mercy Hospital, 411 Canisteo St., Hornell, NY 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
