PHILLIP A. ROSSI, JR.



AVOCA-Phillip A. Rossi, Jr. 79, of N. Main St., Avoca, formerly of Elmira, died Wednesday morning (March 3, 2010) at the Steuben County Health Care Facility in Bath.

Born in Elmira of April 9, 1930, he was the son of the late Teresa Riccindo and Phillip Rossi. On March 26, 1949 he was married in Elmira to the former Betty Personius, who survives.

Phillip graduated from high school in Elmira where he began his career in fire apparatus in 1954 with Ward LaFrance and later with American LaFrance. He then moved to Pennsylvania where he was the chief engineer for Hohn Motors and Fire Apparatus in Hamburg, Pa. He has resided in Avoca for more than 12 years.

While residing in Elmira, Phillip was very active as an "8th warder" and was a member of the Elmira Rotary Club. An avid golfer and pool champ, he also played cards and enjoyed antiquing and traveling. He will be remembered for being a wheeler/dealer and a charmer.

His family includes his wife of 61 years, Betty; his son, Phillip A. Rossi III; his daughter, Eileen Rossi; his five grandchildren, Heather Toolan, Anthony Phillip Rossi, Rhiannan Rossi and Sarah Rossi; his five great-grandchildren and his one great-great-grandchild; his three sisters, Gaetana Hulslander, Aurora Minter and Dorene Tronerud; his sister-in-law, Evelyn Myers; also his nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Gladys Personius.

Calling hours are from noon-2 p.m. today at the Avoca Baptist Church, where a funeral service will be held following calling hours at 2 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev William McFeaters officiating.

Interment will be in Ss. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Elmira.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to the Steuben County Health Care Facility Employee Fund, 7009 Rumsey St. Ext., Bath, N.Y. 14810.
