D. BERNADENE "BERNIE" WHITE
HORNELL-D. Bernadene "Bernie" White, died Tuesday (Feb. 16, 2010) at Highland Hospital in Rochester. She has resided at Woodside Manor in Brighton for the past two years.
A former resident of Honeoye Falls and Hornell, Bernie was born in Howard on Dec. 3, 1919, a daughter of the late Earl and Helen Goff House. On May 20, 1943, she was married to Arthur S. White who died on April 9, 1997. As well as her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her sister, Barbara House and her brother, Frank House.
She was a 1937 graduate of Hornell High School and a 1938 graduate from the former Federal Commercial School in Hornell.
She was employed as a salesperson at the former J.J. Newberry, Budd Jewelers and the Tuttle and Rockwell Department Store all in Hornell. Bernie, a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Hornell for 60 years, was the church's secretary and administrative assistant for 32 years, retiring in 1988. She also taught Sunday School and was the Primary Department Church Superintendent for a number of years. A former member of the United Presbyterian Women's Organization, she served as a Circle Leader.
She is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Don Hammond of Honeoye Falls; her dear grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Scott and Jamie Hammond; her cherished great-grandchildren, Landon and Olivia Hammond all of Avon; her brother, Roger (Karleen) House of Longmont, CO; her sister-in-law, Hester Shepard of Arkport; several nieces and nephews, including her special niece, Debra House of Auburn and cousin, Nancy(Howard) Preston of Rush and dear friends, Phyllis and William Peterson and Elnora Schell.
At her request, there will be no prior calling hours. Family and friends are invited to attend her memorial service at the United Presbyterian Church Memorial Chapel (Main and Church St.) at 1 p.m. Saturday. Interment will be at the Howard Cemetery at the convenience of her family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the United Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 150 Main St., Hornell, NY 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the memorial service.
Arrangements are with the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St. in Hornell.
