FREDERICK J. SLATER, JR.
HORNELL- Frederick J Slater, Jr, 85, of 99 Genesee Street, passed away the morning of Monday (Jan. 18, 2010) at his daughter's home in Hornell.
Fred was born in Rochester on Aug. 29, 1924 to the late Frederick J Slater, Sr and Florence Barnes Slater. He grew up in Waverly, NY and Easton, PA.
A US Naval Aviation Veteran, he served during World War II from 1942-1946 and graduated from the NYS College of Forestry at Syracuse, in 1950. In 1952, Fred married Regina Ann Crandall. They have lived together in Hornell since 1957.
Fred retired in January 1983 after 30 years of service with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. At the time of retirement, he was a Regional Supervisor of Natural Resources at New Paltz. In 1984, Fred retired from the Naval Reserves.
He was a wildlife aficionado and in particular enjoyed spending time on his son-in-law's farm. During his retirement he took pleasure in reading, traveling, spending time with family and friends. For the last 24 years, each spring, Fred volunteered as a tax preparer for area senior citizens.
In addition to his wife, Regina, Fred is survived by his sister Cherie (Robert) Kavanaugh of Easton, PA; his four daughters: Christine (Earl) MacNaughton of Hornell; Cherie (John) Buckley of Hornell; Catherine Giachetti (Nicholas Lewitzky) of Olean; Collette (Mitchell) Cornish of Hornell; his son, John F. Slater of Nashua, NH; his eleven grandchildren: Claire (Kevin) White; Shawn and Shad MacNaughton; Patrick, Colleen and Shannon Buckley; Carie and Matthew Andrus, Chelsea Giachetti; Lee Cornish; Christopher Slater; three great grandchildren: Arden and Adrianna White; Logan Andrus, as well as nieces and nephews.
Fred is preceded in death by his infant daughter Claire Patrice; his brother Donald; and his sisters Mary Dietzel, Geraldine Warner, Captain Beverly Slater of the US Navy, and Dorothy Guzior.
To honor his wishes, there will be no calling hours. A funeral service will take place in his memory at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing, may contribute in Fred's memory to Southern Tier Hospice, 11751 East Corning Rd., Corning, NY 14830. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
