FRANCES V. GORTON
ALFRED-Frances V. Gorton, 90, of 160 North Main St., Alfred, entered into rest early Thursday morning (Sept. 3, 2009) at McAuley Manor in North Hornell after a long illness.
Born in Olean on July 22, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Lynn and Eva Sage Vars. On Feb. 14, 1942, she was married at St. Mary's Church in Olean to John F. Gorton, who survives.
A former resident of Olean, Fran was a graduate of the former Alfred High School, Westbrook Academy in Olean and attended Alfred University.
She has resided in Alfred for about 55 years and before her retirement in 1981 she was employed as a secretary in the admissions department of Alfred University.
Fran was a communicant of St. Jude's Chapel in Alfred and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Brendan's Church in Almond.
A great bowler, for several years she was the highest scoring female bowler in Alfred.
Her family includes her husband of 67 years, John; her three children, Kathleen Hoffmaster (Bob Jarvis) of Panama City, Fla., Mary Liz Schwartz (Donald Kelley) of Hornell and Michael (Laurie) Gorton of Rochester; her six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; her sister, Mildred Dudley of Orange City, Fla.; also her nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her four brothers.
To honor her wishes there will be no calling hours. A Mass will be celebrated in her memory at St. Jude's Chapel in Alfred at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to the Activities Fund of McAuley Manor, 1 Bethesda Dr., Hornell, NY 14843.
