RITA J. (DUFFY) CRISS ALMETER
ANGELICA/HORNELL-Rita J. (Duffy) Criss Almeter, 82, formerly of Angelica and Hornell, and a resident of Manor Hills in Wellsville for the past two years, passed away Tuesday evening (Aug. 11, 2009) at the Highland Healthcare Center in Wellsville where she had been a patient for the past two days.
Born in Olean on April 5, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Owen and Catherine Rockwell Duffy. On July 1, 1950 she was married in Angelica to Richard P. Criss, who predeceased her on Dec. 13, 1975 after 25 years of marriage. On May 15, 1981 she was married in Angelica to Paul J. Almeter, who predeceased her on Sept. 21, 2007 after 25 ? years of marriage. Besides her parents and husbands, she was also predeceased by her son, Larry P. Criss in April of 1980; her brother, John Duffy in 1993 and her stepdaughter, Mary Abby Hurd in 2005.
A graduate of Angelica High School and the former Hornell Business School, Rita resided in Hornell for over 30 years before returning to the Angelica area in 1981 where she resided until 2007 at which time she became a resident of Manor Hills in Wellsville.
She was employed for over 10 years as an admissions and billing clerk at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell. For about 10 years she was employed as a greeter at Walmart in Hornell; a job that she truly loved.
Rita was a devout communicant of St. Ann's Church of Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Hornell and Sacred Heart Church in Angelica, where she was also a member of the church's Altar & Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Birdsall Grange, the Progress Club of Allegany County and the Old Hens Club in Angelica.
An avid traveler, she also enjoyed camping and knitting items for her family and friends. Some of her other favorite pastimes included baking cookies that she generously shared with area nursing home residents and making pies for several community and church events. She will be remembered most of all for her love of her grandchildren who were also the recipients of her many baked goods and items that she knitted.
Her family includes her three children, Joanne (Robert) Black of Andover, Linda (Tom) Harding of Webster and James (Tammy) Criss of Arkport; her two stepdaughters, Caroline (Mark) Brown of Gainesville, Fla. and Elaine (Joseph) Herdman of Angelica; her stepson, Paul Almeter of Angelica; her 20 grandchildren, several step-grand and step great-grandchildren and her one very special great-granddaughter; her two sisters, Mary Garnsey of Ontario, NY and Ann (Richard) Osgood of Wellsboro, Pa.; her two brothers, Owen (Joan) Duffy of Hornell and James "Pat" (June) Duffy of Angelica; also her nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours are from 4-7 p.m. today at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Friends are invited to meet her family at St. Ann's Church in Hornell where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Town of Fremont.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to either the Hornell Area Humane Society, PO Box 533, Hornell, NY 14843 or to the SPCA serving Allegany County, PO Box 381, Wellsville, NY 14895. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
